Structural steel plays an important role for facilities and plants, and thus requires in depth paint consideration. Its location, its current condition, its purpose, and environmental conditions all play an important role in selecting the appropriate industrial paint. If location is the exterior of the facility, then the steel can be exposed to tough weather elements, which can cause expansion and contraction. With this much flexing, the applicator should consider an elastomeric coating, which will flex with the contracting steel to prevent cracking. Sitting water can also be a concern, as submerged paint is more likely to fail. In that situation, an epoxy paint system will provide superior adhesion to the substrate, and create an impermeable coat that will repel water. If the steel�s current condition is corroded and rusty, then adequate preparation is required for superior adhesion. After the rust has been removed, prime the substrate with a moisture-cured rust-inhibitor. Sometimes interior steel�s location can cause a hazard. These situations require safety colors, to improve visibility for the workers. Each piece of steel requires special consideration for which application would be most appropriate. A good rule of thumb is that solvent paints perform better, but each piece is circumstantial and requires evaluation.

Tanks and silos are common facility storage units that can be found in most petroleum or food manufacturing locations. They offer an important value for each facility, and thus require a thoughtful paint application that will prevent the corrosion of the steel. The roof of each silo and tank is typically flat, and can be subjected to prolonged submersion to sitting water (snow, excessive rain). This submersion can break down most coating applications, and therefore requires specific attention to these details. An epoxy paint system will offer excellent adhesion to the surface of the silo/tank, and is simultaneously impervious to water. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can deteriorate coatings, and thus should be top coated with an aliphatic urethane. Aliphatic urethanes are UV resistant, and will prevent a protective coatings from chalking or ambering due to sunlight. And because tanks and silos are typically outdoors, environmental issues need to be addressed. In these outdoor environments, industrial paint needs to provide environmental consideration, and should offer low volatile organic compounds as well as other environmental compliant properties.

Industrial facilities will almost always deal with excessive temperatures. Sometimes those excessive temperatures come from exhaust pipes or stacks, ovens, hot water pipes, boilers, pits, and numerous other sources. Heat is a major element that can cause a lot of challenges for coatings, and thus requires close examination and surveillance to ensure that the appropriate industrial paint is applied for superior performance. Typically, high-temperature coatings will have ground mica as a main ingredient. Mica is a superb additive that reduces chalking, resists shearing and shrinking, resists water and weathering, and offers superior adhesion. Due to the extreme nature of excessive heat, the substrate is always provoked to failure, and requires an industrial paint that will cater to the substrate�s needs during these extreme times. Additionally, ground mica offers great color retention, and allows high-temperature coatings to be pigmented. Hot pipes need to be appropriately marked for worker safety, and require a high-temp coating that can retain a specific color, so that workers can identify which pipes need to be proceeded with caution.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing is subject to some of the most strict regulations regarding maintenance and cleanliness. Their facilities need to be clean, and thus are subjected to constant cleaning and cleaning products. In environments exposed to high pressure water and detergent, the substrates need to be water tolerant, impenetrable, and resistant to concentrated detergents. Because of the high pressure water, coatings need to have superior adhesion. Epoxies typically offer the best adhesion, while providing a superior performance that is chemical resistant and impervious to water. Additionally, pharmaceutical plants require low odor and volatile organic compounds in their facilities. Epoxy paints, again, can be manufactured in water-based formulas that emit no odors of volatile organic compounds, ensuring that the pharmaceutical plant is compliant with all regulations of cleanliness and maintenance. �

Food manufacturing is in the same situation as pharmaceutical facilities. They both need to be well maintained, clean, and impervious to contaminants. Often, food manufacturing plants are built from cinder blocks. Although structurally sound, cinder blocks pose a threat to maintenance, as they are very porous. The porous quality creates a high absorption rate, which creates a challenge in creating an impervious coat. If the wrong paint is applied, pinholes can form in the application, which creates a failed application. An acrylic resin surfacer is a popular solution, as it can be applied as high as 16 mils, which offers enough material to cover the valleys and crevices on the surface. Acrylic paints are water-based, which is preferred in food facilities. Water-based paints offer no odor, are solvent free, and have no volatile organic compounds. These performance properties offer an ideal solution for these environments, and are readily sought after from maintenance and plant managers.
